Social Security
Students registering for higher education are obliged to join the students’ social security scheme. Membership is free from the age of 16, but contributions are due from those between the ages of 20 and 28 (except grant-aided students). Contributions for the 2005/2006 university year were €186.

Foreigner students
Each year students must give details of the local section of the insurance fund to which they belong in order to obtain the refund of their social security expenses.
